Family / Marital Status

Proof that your spouse/partner and/or child(ren) will live with you full-time.

Academic Status

Proof of current registration in full-time U of T undergraduate or graduate degree program.

What is the difference between enrolment and registration?

To enroll, you add courses; to register, you pay your tuition and incidental fees, or register without payment (defer fees). You are considered registered as soon as you have paid tuition and incidental fees or have requested to register without payment (i.e. fee deferral). Both are essential processes for every undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Toronto and especially for living in residence.

Am I still eligible if I take a leave of absence from my studies?

If you’re considering taking a leave from your studies at U of T, please consult with the Admissions Office before pausing your studies, as taking a leave may affect your eligibility to remain in University Family Housing. Supporting documentation will be required when your leave is under review by UFH.

Types of Leaves:

  • Parental Leave: Residents may take up to one year of leave if they or their partner (living with them) has or adopts a child.
  • Medical Leave: Residents may take up to one term of leave.
  • Other Leaves: For other types of leaves, please contact the Admissions Office to discuss your situation.

Financial Status

Proof of financial ability to pay rent in full and on time.

Acceptable documentation includes:

  • Employment income (e.g., letter of employment, consecutive paystubs)
  • Bank statements or loans
  • OSAP, student funding packages, grants, bursaries, or scholarships
  • Other forms of financial assistance

Please note that rent is due on the 1st day of each month during your tenancy. We are unable to accommodate late payment schedules.

Family / Marital Status

Proof that your spouse/partner and/or child(ren) will live with you full-time.

  • Identification for all family members.
  • Proof of marriage of common-law status: Marriage certificate or an affidavit confirming a common-law relationship for at least one year, along with supporting documents such as a shared bank account, credit card, utility bills, insurance policy, or proof of engagement.
  • Single parents: Documentation confirming majority custody (50% or more), such as separation, divorce, custody papers, birth registration papers, or child support paperwork.
  • Proof of children: Birth certificates or medical documentation confirming pregnancy and due date.
  • Residency requirements: If any family members are not currently residing locally, travel documentation must be provided to show they will be joining you.

Immigration Documentation

In cases where family members are out of the country, the student MUST provide immigration documents and airline tickets for the family members showing they will be coming long-term to live with you before we can offer an apartment. We are unable to permit single students to rent apartments in University Family Housing.

You cannot accept an apartment without submitting your and your family’s immigration documents. We require a copy of the actual immigration document, not the approval letter from IRCC. If you do not have the actual document yet, please contact the Centre for International Experience at isa.cie@utoronto.ca for assistance.
