Although many UFH residents are not U of T students, they are often just as involved with student life.

In this special episode of the Student Parent Perspective, we’re talking to Rodrigo, the spouse of Masters of Education Student, Leslie (check out her interview from a few weeks back!). He shares his perspective on what it’s like to support your partner as they embark on full time studies while also balancing parenting responsibilities for their daughter, Raquel.

Has the time change got you feeling the winter blues already?πŸ₯ΆCheck out our new Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) LampsπŸ’‘β˜€οΈin the Study Room (30 Charles, 3rd floor)!

β˜€οΈSeasonal Affective Disorder is a depressive symptom triggered by seasonal changes in the northern latitudes. SAD usually occurs in the fall and winter months when the days shorten, and sunlight starts to decrease. People struggling with SAD can feel sad or down during the day. Other symptoms may include low energy, needing more sleep than usual, and changes in appetite.

β˜€οΈOne of the most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of SAD is through light therapy, which uses specially designed lamps to mimic natural sunlight. Exposure to this light stimulates the release of serotonin, boosting its levels in the body. Additionally, studies have shown that light therapy can improve mood and alleviate the distress often associated with the β€œwinter blues.”

β˜€οΈTo use the SAD lamp effectively, turn it on and place it 16-20 inches away from you. Use the lamp for 20-30 minutes while studying, reading, or relaxing.

β˜€οΈIt is best to use the light in the morning to help maintain a proper sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Avoid using the light at night and ensure it is used at the same time every day to maintain consistency and reduce symptoms.

β˜€οΈPosition the lamp above eye level and facing downwards to prevent it from shining directly into your eyes. This setup ensures you get the most benefit from the lamp while staying comfortable!

Every Child Matters 🧑 September 30 marks Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Both days of recognitionβ€”one Indigenous-led and the other established by the federal governmentβ€”call for remembrance, reflection, and action around the history and devastating legacy of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples and communities.

Orange Shirt Day, launched in 2013, centres the childhood experience of survivor Phyllis Webstad to convey the profound and lasting damage that Canadian residential schools inflicted upon Indigenous children, their families, and their communities.

The Canadian government created the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2021 to fulfill Call to Action #80 of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015), which identified the need to maintain public memory of Canada’s residential schools as part of the reconciliation process.

🧑 This post’s illustration is an award-winning orange shirt design by MJ Singleton, an Ojibwe, two-spirit student from Migisi Sahgaigan First Nation who is studying at @uoftmississauga

🧑 Their design, titled noojimo’iwe, emphasizes the importance of healing the intergenerational trauma of residential schools by supporting and loving those around you. It portrays a mother holding hands and walking forward with her two children. Above them is a bright sun with contour lines connecting to a floral pattern and designs representing all living things.🧑
