Charles Street

Garbage & Recycling

Each building has a garbage chute and a designated garbage, recycling, and organic waste disposal area at street level. The disposal area at 35 CSW is located outside on the south side of the building facing St. Mary’s Street. The disposal area at 30 CSW is located inside the building and is accessible through the door on the north side of the elevator lobby. The door locks after you, so don’t forget your fob and keys if you want to get back in!

Disposing Of Items

Small Garbage

Garbage must be bagged, tied, and thrown down the chute located on each floor. You must ensure that your garbage goes down the chute by pushing it past the metal flap and that the metal door to the chute closes after you’re done. In consideration of residents who live near the chute, do not use the chute between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:00 am. Anything that doesn’t comfortably fit in the chute should be disposed of according to the “large garbage” instructions below.

Large Garbage

Items that will not comfortably fit in the garbage chute must be disposed of in the large brown bins in the disposal area located at street level.

Bulk Garbage

Particularly large items (e.g., furniture) must be deposited in the designated bulk drop-off areas in the disposal area at street level. At 35 Charles this is located in the wooden enclosure located on the south end of the loading dock. At 30 Charles this is located in the northwest corner of the garbage room.

Recycling, Organic Waste, and Composting

Reusable Items

Certain items that are still in good condition can be donated to the Free Store (3rd Floor, 30 Charles) – please consult the sign on the door of the Free Store for what can and cannot be donated. If you have recently had pest activity in your apartment (in the last 3-6 months) please do not donate to the Free Store.

Compost

Each apartment has been equipped with an organic food bin (Kitchen Catcher). Organic waste should be double bagged to prevent dripping and then disposed of in the large green bins located in the disposal area at street level. You do not need to purchase separate organic bin bags; any plastic bag will do. Click here to find out more information on what can and cannot be put into the organics bin.

Basic Recycling

Recycling bins are NOT garbage bins – please separate your garbage and recycling. Never dispose of recycling in black plastic bags; black plastic is not recyclable in the City of Toronto.

Special Recycling

Special recycling (e.g., batteries, small electronics) can be brought to the Free Store during regular business hours.

  • Unsure of how to dispose of an item? Consult the City of Toronto’s Waste Wizard to learn what to do with your waste materials.
