35 Charles Electrical Equipment Upgrade – Planned Power Outage

Please be advised that following recent main electrical system inspections for the building, it has been determined that current electrical disconnect equipment serving the commercial units attached to 35 Charles Street, must be upgraded. This critical infrastructure is subject to failure if not repaired immediately, and this work must be undertaken without delay to ensure continued service to all building occupants. Therefore, building electrical service will be shut down on November 10th at 11:30pm through November 11th at 3:30am (approximately) to facilitate this equipment upgrade.

Emergency power will be used once the main power source is shut down for the building, however this will be limited to elevators and some emergency lighting throughout the buildings. Domestic water supply equipment, building heating systems, and any HVAC systems (kitchen and bathroom exhaust, corridor make-up air) will also all be shutdown, however this short duration shutdown has been scheduled during the overnight hours to be a minimal impact on the residents.

We understand that notice of a power outage is never welcome news, however it is important to understand the relationship between the residential tower of 35 Charles, the commercial/retail units, and the Daycare center on the ground level. Each area is provided with utilities, centrally. Water, natural gas, and electrical services for the property are distributed from a main service hub in the underground parking garage. Given that these electrical upgrades are required to be completed in the main electrical service location, we are unable to isolate the commercial space, therefore a full building power outage is required. The completion of this upgrade, at this time, is necessary to avoid an unplanned service interruption in the future due to equipment failure or service requirements.

To help accommodate our residents, laundry facilities and public washrooms at 30 Charles will be made available for use. We also recommend filling bottles, containers, and pots with water before the shutdown. Furthermore, the Meeting Room and Activity Room, located on the 3rd floor, will remain open for resident use. These rooms are equipped with WIFI, tables and chairs.

Building Operations staff and additional security staff will be on-site managing the shutdown for its duration.
