Become a Charles Street Residence Advisor! A position on the 2024-2025 Residence Advisor team has opened and we’re looking for an eager Charles Street student resident to join the team! If you are a University Family Housing resident that is a full-time U of T student, you are eligible to be a Residence Advisor (RA). The RA work term is from February 1, 2025, to July 31, 2025. Green Living Indoors: Grow, Compost, Create

This hands-on workshop series promotes sustainable living in urban settings. Participants will learn to grow nutritious microgreens year-round, set up vermicomposting systems to recycle kitchen waste, and create beautiful terrariums for indoor greenery. This program encourages eco-friendly practices that facilitate indoor growing, reduce waste, and bring nature into urban living spaces, making it ideal for individuals and families seeking sustainable living!

Session 1: Grow Your Own Microgreens

November 4, 2024 | 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM | Recreation Room

Tired of expensive, limp leafy greens? Join a Toronto Master Gardener to learn how to grow fresh, highly nutritious, organic microgreens and sprouts all year-round. It’s easy! You don’t need a lot of room, light or even a green thumb – just a yearning for that first crunchy bite of food you’ve grown yourself. Participants will leave with supplies to help get them started.

Session 2: Indoor Vermicomposting – The Power of Worms

November 18, 2024 | 6:30 – 8:00 PM | Recreation Room

Did you know that worms have an amazing capacity to turn our food scraps into food for our plants?  Did you know that with a few worms, a small bin and an apple core or two that you can set up this worm factory indoors? Join a Toronto Master Gardener to learn about this fascinating and eco-friendly way to use food scraps to create organic fertilizer for your houseplants and balcony gardens. We’ll provide the bins and worms – you provide the apple cores!

Session 3: Terrariums – The Art and Science of growing plants in jars.

December 2, 2024 | 6:30-8:00 PM | Recreation Room

Using tiny plants that enjoy high humidity and low light, creating a terrarium is both an art and a science.  Come learn how to balance the art of creating a beautiful miniature landscape with the science of keeping it thriving.  Come prepared to plant your very own!
