Workshops will include presentations, demonstrations and hands-on learning. Bring your questions, your containers and your enthusiasm!

Sessions 1-3 will take place in the Recreation Room on the 2nd floor of 35 Charles. Session 4 will take place on the Rooftop Garden on the 3rd floor of 30 Charles (weather dependant). Residents can register for individual sessions, but we encourage registering and attending all as content carries over from one session to the next!

Our programs are free-of-charge and reserved for UFH tenants only. Spaces are limited. Please register early. Registration opens Monday, March 11th at 9:00am. Please be mindful that a recreation account is needed to register, and the account approval process on our system takes 2-3 days, so creating your account before registration opens is advised.

Session #1: Houseplant Workshop – Monday, March 18th at 7:00pm

Growing houseplants can be just as rewarding as outdoor gardening. Plants in the natural garden rely on nature to meet their needs. Houseplants, on the other hand, rely on the gardener to meet all of their growing requirements. This comprehensive demo will walk you through the basics. Plants in need of id or a little TLC welcome to come as your guest. Plants to swap? A draw will be held for some plant materials at the end of the demo.

Session #2: Starting Seeds Indoors and Growing Sprouts and Microgreens – Monday, April 8th at 7:00pm

Want to enjoy vegetables you’ve grown yourself in your own backyard or on your balcony? A Toronto Master Gardener will lead a demonstration on starting seeds indoors and show how to get started to grow your own vegetables. Get some tips and learn techniques for successful growing. At the end of the demo, vegetable seeds or seedlings will be given out to attendees, while supplies last.

Session #3: Successful Balcony Gardening Presentation – Monday, April 22nd at 7:00pm

This presentation will go over all the basics you need to know to be a successful balcony gardener. Whether you want to grow flowers or food, attract bees, birds or butterflies, this session will show you how to evaluate the right soil, plants, containers and light exposure to ensure a successful garden on your balcony.

Session #4: Planting a Container Workshop – Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00pm

Pollinators need a supply of nectar over the growing season, so if you are planting up pots for your garden or balcony, why not make choices that will attract birds, bees, and butterflies? During this workshop, you will plant a container for growing your own salad ingredients or attracting pollinators – or maybe arrange a bit of both for a beautiful display. At the end of the demonstration, materials will be distributed to participants, while supplies last.
