Moving Out

Student Family Housing

Please note that all Student Family Housing residents at 30 and 35 Charles Street West and in the Huron-Sussex units are required to submit 60 days Notice to Vacate by the last day of any month.

Example: If you would like to vacate May 31st, your Notice to Vacate (signed by all lease holders) must be submitted to the Residence Office by March 31st.

submitting notice to vacate policy

We are unable to accept Notices to Vacate after the deadline. You are legally and financially obligated to pay rent to cover the entire time period following the submission of your notice. For example, if you submit your notice to vacate on June 2, it must be for a move-out date of August 31, since it was submitted after May 31. In this case, you would be responsible for paying rent for June and July, while your Last Month’s Rent deposit will apply for August.

Please refer to the below chart to determine when you need to submit your notice to vacate by.

Move-Out Inspections

After submitting your Notice to Vacate, you will receive a move-out email with a comprehensive list of guidelines to help ensure your apartment is left in “clean and good condition”, as detailed in your lease terms. Below is a quick overview of some of these guidelines. An inspection of your apartment will be conducted after you have vacated to determine whether the unit has been left in good order or if any charges and fees will apply.

Guidelines

  • Floors should be swept and mopped.
  • The kitchen should be cleaned to remove grease and food from cabinets, shelves, counters, sink, and faucet.
  • The refrigerator must be cleaned inside and out. The freezer should be defrosted to remove ice buildup. Do not use any sharp objects to break or pry off the ice. If the freezer is damaged during defrosting, you will be charged for repairs.
  • The stove/oven must be cleaned inside and out, and free of grease. Use appropriate stove and oven cleaners.
  • Bathroom walls, toilet (inside and out), sink, fan, and floor must be cleaned.
  • All personal items not provided by UFH – including furniture, window coverings, shower curtains, shelving units, custom light fixtures, air conditioning units, stickers, posters, graffiti – must be removed.
  • Garbage must be properly disposed of – use the garbage chute for smaller bagged items or bring large items to the bins located on the ground floor of each building. Do not leave anything in the hallways, common arrears, or garbage chute room.
  • Any paint colours applied to the unit must be returned to the original color or covered with a white primer.
