Noise Complaints
According to the City of Toronto, “in a city as large and vibrant as Toronto, certain levels of noise are reasonable and reflect life in a densely populated city.” Similarly, your lease agreement states, “This is a student residence building and a family building. The sound of children playing in their apartment in the day or early evening is normal and expected (…)”
However, as per your lease agreement, residents or guests are prohibited from making improper noise. Improper noise is defined according to the City of Toronto Noise Bylaw; please refer to the bylaw regarding time restrictions and sound level limits for various types of noise. In accordance with the bylaw, quiet hours in the building are between 11 pm and 7 am.
Improper noise (e.g., from neighbours or their pets) should be reported to Security immediately. Security will investigate the source of the noise, speak to any applicable units, and involve Campus Safety, should the noise continue. Security will also file a report with the Residence Office who will conduct appropriate follow-up during regular business hours.
