U of T includes counselling services in their supplemental health insurance through Greenshield Canada, for all students and additionally for those working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Course Instructor (CI) under CUPE3902 Unit 1. Students can add dependents to their plan(s) during specific opt in periods discussed below.

The following providers can provide reimbursable counseling:

  • Psychologist (C. Psych).
  • Registered Psychotherapist (RP/RP Qualifying).
  • Clinical therapist with a Master of Social Work (MSW/RSW).

Your total coverage for counseling sessions will differ depending on which student union you belong to and whether you are a CUPE3902 Unit 1 member. Below is a table showing what each insurance covers.

Adding Dependents

You must opt-in your dependents (i.e., spouse and/or children) to your primary plan (i.e., UTSU, SCSU, UTMSU, or UTGSU) annually, during the opt-in period. Adding dependents to your insurance plan must be done by the set deadline, usually the beginning of October. Exact dates, costs and forms can be found under ‘Opt-in resources’ in the table.
