Electrical & Energy Conservation

Light Bulbs

All electricity, or hydro, costs are included in your rent.

Energy efficient LED light bulbs should be installed when you move in and left in place when you move-out. Replacement bulbs can be obtained from the Residence Office. Please bring your old bulb with you. Note: If the old bulb has been damaged by the resident, rather than simply burning-out, a fee will apply equal to the cost of the replacement bulb.

Breaker Panel

Your apartment’s electrical power is fed from the electrical breaker panel concealed behind a small metal door, which is usually located in the wall of your hall closet, storage room or kitchen.

Have you suddenly discovered a power loss in one or more areas of your apartment? Were you using two or more appliances simultaneously (e.g., hair dryer, toaster, microwave, etc.)?

The breaker panel has black switches which can ‘trip’ when they become overloaded. If a breaker ‘trips’, it can be easily reset by pushing the tripped switch all the way to the off position until you hear a click and then switching it back to the on position, much like a light switch. Note: Moving from the tripped switch position directly to ‘ON’ will not reset the breaker.

If you require assistance with electrical issues in your unit, contact the on-call Maintenance Technician for immediate assistance.

Energy Conservation

Energy conservation helps the environment and keeps the cost of rent down. Any increase in the cost of utilities (e.g., water, electricity, etc.) is paid for by residents, reflected in rent increases.

Some recommendations for reducing energy costs are:

  • Turn off lights and electronics (e.g., computers, TVs, air-conditioners, etc.) not in use.
  • Report water loss such as a leaky tap to the Residence Office.Do not use your oven as a supplemental heat source for the apartment.
    •  If your apartment is cold, please contact the office and ask them to come to your unit to assess the situation.
