730 Yonge Retail and Residential Improvements Update 8 – Noise Complaints and Updated Crane Hoist Date

Last Friday we issued a communication regarding construction work at 730 Yonge that was supposed to take place on Saturday, February 19th. The construction team was not able to execute on this work last week and the 730 Yonge Construction Project Manager has informed us that the work will now be taking place this Saturday, February 26th, starting at 7:30 am and be completed by 10:00 am. The below communication details the work being done with updated times and dates.

Updated Communication

We have been made aware of complaints from our residents regarding loud construction noises after 12:00 pm. This noise did not pertain to any unit upgrade work being done by our staff or contractors at Charles Street, and after investigating the matter we learned that the noises were coming from the construction work being done at 730 Yonge. We have spoken to the 730 Yonge Construction Project Manager and have reminded them of the requirements to limit any noisy work to the 9:00 am – 12:00 pm time frame we had set out in our contracts. They have confirmed with us that they will enforce this with their team, and we will be monitoring their work closely to ensure they follow the requirement.

Construction at 730 Yonge St. continues with a new mechanical rooftop unit that needs to be placed on the podium roof along Charles St. west of Yonge. The work will take place on Saturday, February 26th, starting at 7:30 am and shall be completed by 10:00 am.

A crane will be used and will be set up on the north side of Charles Street. Paid Duty Police Officers will provide pedestrian and vehicle traffic control. The rooftop unit will be delivered to the site on a truck. The crane will remove the unit from the truck, and finally place it on the roof in position.

The crane will position itself approximately in this location:

The overall area plan along the street will look like this:

The crane and unit will arrive on site 7:30 am and begin preparing. Police will cordon off the area including the street and sidewalk to all vehicles and pedestrian access. During this period, the north sidewalk of Charles St. along the retail unit will not be accessible (please use the south side of the road, and cross at Balmuto or Yonge St.). The hoisting work will be completed by 10:00 am. There should be no loud sounds other than normal vehicular noise from this operation.

If you have any questions or concerns about the building, please email us at operationscharles.ufh@utoronto.ca. For any additional concerns, please contact Apostolo Zeno, Assistant Director of University Family Housing at apostolo.zeno@utoronto.ca

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we make these necessary improvements to our facilities.
