730 Yonge Retail and Residential Improvements Update 9 – Exterior Cladding Work
As part of the construction at 730 Yonge St., the exterior of the building will be newly clad with a combination of tile and fibre reinforced cement panels around the perimeter of the first floor of the building. The work will begin on Tuesday April 19th and will take approximately 2 months to complete. Noisy work will only occur between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, however, non-disruptive construction may take place during normal business hours after 12:00 pm.
This cladding work is intended to refresh the exterior and will include a decorative band of fibre reinforced cement panels along a horizontal band at the top, and decorative tile work along the columns and base of the storefronts.
The work will begin with the installation of a cement board backing. The construction will flow from the northwest corner of the building in a counterclockwise direction, down Balmuto St., then east on Charles St. and north on Yonge St. By the end of the first week (April 21st – 22nd) waterproofing will take place on the Charles St. elevation. On April 28th, tile work will begin around the perimeter and will follow the cement board.
To reach the upper sections of the work area, an elevated work platform will be used. Work areas will be temporarily barricaded as the workers move through, but normal pedestrian traffic around the building will not be impeded.
Noisy work for these construction activities includes the affixing of anchors (i.e. screws) into the concrete slab of the building. The hammer drilling to complete this work will cause vibrations in the slab that can travel through the building. Noise will be limited to the morning hours between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.
Further updates will be provided as the work progresses.
If you have any questions or concerns about the building, please email us at operationscharles.ufh@utoronto.ca. For any additional concerns, please contact Apostolo Zeno, Assistant Director of University Family Housing at apostolo.zeno@utoronto.ca.
